Jan 20, 2024, What a Harvest Day in Sandpiper VEXIQ Robotics Tournament
All WeRobot teams and HS mentors had a bountiful day at the Sandpiper VEXIQ Robotics tournament. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Sandpiper Robotics program, where all our HS mentors embarked on their robotics journey. Today is the day to showcase how our HS mentors give back to the community.
The Red Team (2014F), the middle school team led by Rien and Satoru, clinched the Excellence Award, securing a spot in the State Championship for the 2023-2024 season. Their total score placed them in the top 25 in the US and the top 75 in the world! Their well-crafted design notebook and detailed interviews captivated the judges' attention, ultimately earning them the Excellent Award.
The Yellow Team (2014W), comprised of all 3rd graders and led by Kevin and Jenkins, impressed the judges with their unique robot design and strategies. They are the only known team capable of consistently handling two big red blocks, along with other small blocks. Their full parking caught the eyes of the entire audience at the tournament, leading them to receive the "Creative Award" without a doubt.
The Green Team (2014S), led by Rien and Giancarlos, showed remarkable dedication in their first year. Despite being newcomers, they put together a functional robot, comprehensive design notes, and a well-prepared presentation for the judges' interview. The students were delighted with what they had learned and how they transformed design ideas into a working robot.
Special recognition goes to Rien and Kevin for taking on various roles on tournament day. Rien played a key role in planning and setup, serving as an Emcee for the second consecutive year. Kevin, in his first year, assumed the roles of Robot Inspector, Referee, and Emcee, forming a great Emcee team with humorous and enthusiastic energy that pleased the crowd throughout the event.
During the award ceremony, Kevin and Rien were honored with the Gold President's Volunteer Service Award for their volunteer service and impact on the community. Congratulations!
